Elyria High stars honored

Elyria High had seven players named to the All-Northeast Ohio Conference River Division football teams — five to the all-conference team and two to the honorable-mention list.

Offensive tackle Isaiah Byler, tailback Trynell Davis, defensive end Chare Farris, free safety Jacob Neuschaefer and linebacker Cameron Koepp were named to the all-conference team. Defensive tackle Brandon Bailey and offensive guard Caleb Shaffer were chosen for the honorable-mention list.

In volleyball, Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division champion Elyria saw head coach Jodie Johnson named championship coach and five of the Pioneers named to the Division’s all-star teams.

Kristen Boros, Brigette Jones and Jazmyn Corlew of the Pioneers, who finished with an 8-2 divisional record, were named to the all-division team. Shelby Obitts and Shelby Regiec were selected for the honorable-mention list.

A total of 11 Elyria soccer players — six girls and five boys — were named to the Northeast Ohio Conference All-Lake Division teams.

Tim Jones, John Supel and Kevin Leininger were selected for the all-division team, while Connor Mariner and Bryce Ziegman of the Pioneers (1-2-2 Lake Division) were chosen for the honorable-mention list.

In girls soccer, Alecia Jones, Jenny Jerome and Bailey Andress were named all-division, and Robin Damron, Kaleigh Plato and Cassandra Gouge of the Pioneers (0-3-1 Lake Division) were selected for the honorable-mention list.

Elyria senior girls tennis player Jackie Penfound was named first-team All-Northeast Ohio Conference Lake Division for first singles.

Freshman Angela Rodriguez and junior Katy Newton of the Pioneers were selected for the honorable- mention list.

The Pioneers finished in sixth place in the overall standings and in the tournament standings.

LCCC basketball player named to All-American team

Lorain County Community College point guard Devaujhn Boddie was named to the preseason All-American team by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Boddie is in his second season at LCCC after starring at Archbishop Hoban High School.

“I have a big thing on my shoulders now,” Boddie said. “I have to perform every game now that I’m All-American.

Boddie stands only 5-foot-9 but according to his coach, Ralph Berrios, he plays well above the height.

“He may be the smallest player on the floor but he’s still the best player on the floor,” Berrios said. “He’s a great young man who has proved at each level he’s played that hard work pays off, and the rewards are just starting to come in.”

The Commodores are expected to be an improved team this season with Boddie leading the way.

“We’ve got a really great team this year and I believe we’re going to do really well,” Boddie said.

Berrios, in his ninth season as coach, thinks this may be his best team.

“We’re really excited about the team,” he said. “This is probably the most balanced athletically, and strongest teams since I’ve been here.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the kids mature, and by the end of the season, I expect to have more players receiving accolades and accomplishments from the conference.”

Ohio Athletic Conference honors area soccer players

A total of seven Baldwin-Wallace soccer players — five men and two women — and four area players on other teams have been honored by the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Sophomore forward Carlin Vandendriessche (Medina High), junior midfielder Jeff Grater (Stow), senior goalie Russ Mika (Medina) and senior defender Nate Smith (Ashland) of the Yellow Jackets were named to the first team. Senior midfielder Andy Synk (Strongsville) was named to the second team.

In addition, Mika was named Goalie of the Year after he led the conference with a .816 save percentage, .95 goals against average and seven shutouts. Mika played in 21 games (1,795 minutes) and became the second B-W goalie to earn the honor.

Senior defender Stephanie Geiger (Berea) was selected to the first team, while teammate Tyler Fridley (Niles McKinley), also a senior defender, was picked for the honorable-mention list.

Mount Union sophomore midfielder T.J. Welch (Columbia) was named to the men’s first team and also was named Midfielder of the Year. He is the third Purple Raider to earn the honor after he scored 18 points (.95 per game) and scored eight goals (.42 per game).

Ohio Northern senior defender Dan Schade (Westlake) was named to the first team and also was chosen
Co-Defender of the Year. He totaled eight points (one goal, six assists) to help lead the Polar Bears to a conference-leading 11 shutouts and .78 goals against average and is the second Polar Bear to earn the honor. Ohio Northern is making its third appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Ohio Northern sophomore goalie Kristen Dewees (Bay) was named to the second team, and Marietta senior goalie Jenna Freeman (Bay) was selected for the honorable-mention list.

Senior Skyler Dum was named to the men’s soccer first team, while senior Dan Jaffe and junior goalie Zach Lipshultz have been selected for the second team.

Hayman also aided the Yeomen defense, as they had six shutouts and held opponents to 1.06 goals per game, fourth best in the NCAC.

Miller-Farrell missed several games due to an injury but still was an integral part of Oberlin’s offense.
