B-W baseball standout Cody Kidd could be a pro prospect or an optometrist

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports
B-W star has a bright future.

B-W star has a bright future.

Cody Kidd can see a bright future on the horizon, it’s just that the details are a little fuzzy right now.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing for someone thinking about becoming an optometrist. He knows everything will come into focus eventually.
Still, the Baldwin-Wallace senior baseball standout and Wellington High grad isn’t sure just yet what he’ll be doing immediately following his graduation May 10, just eight days after he leads the Yellow Jackets in a doubleheader against Wilmington College in what will be his final collegiate baseball games.
He could be starting graduate work toward that optometry career or he could be getting an opportunity to turn his passion into a career as a professional baseball player.
“It really feels great,” Kidd said of being labeled a pro prospect. “It’s something that I’ve always wanted to do. To be able to have that chance just to have my talent being named and actually people saying that I am talented enough to have that chance makes me very happy.”

Ohio State: Offensive line taking heat for offensive woes

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports

COLUMBUS — In coffee shops, on city buses, at the kitchen table and around the water cooler, Ohio State fans are becoming increasingly familiar with the guys on the offensive line.
This is not a good thing. What is being said about the usually anonymous guys on the front wall isn’t fit for young ears.
Sure, the Buckeyes are No. 12 in the nation and share the Big Ten lead with marks of 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference. But that offensive line stinks! Or so everyone says.

Ohio State tight end Ballard a fan of two-QB offense

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports

Tight end Jake BallardCOLUMBUS — Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has no doubt that Terrelle Pryor is his quarterback.
Not all of his players agree.
Tight end Jake Ballard believes Tressel should reintroduce sixth-year senior Todd Boeckman back into the offense to share the job with Pryor. Pryor has shown flashes of skill but also has been hesitant and has committed typical freshman mistakes since taking over as the starter four games ago.

Ohio State men’s basketball feeling optomistic about upcoming season

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports

COLUMBUS — Here is the Ohio State men’s basketball team in a nutshell: no seniors, missing its top three scorers, but lots of promise.
For the third year in a row, coach Thad Matta will be overseeing a Buckeyes team that has more newcomers than veterans, more freshmen than upperclassmen, more questions than answers.
“I really like this team,” Matta said during media day. “But there are so many unknowns. We have to get into it and see what happens and how things shake out. There are some pieces here.”
The first time Matta had to rebuild was two years ago, when freshmen Greg Oden, Michael Conley and Daequan Cook led the Buckeyes to the national championship game, where they lost to Florida. Then all three left for the NBA.

Ohio State’s Pryor learning faster than the average freshman

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports

COLUMBUS — Classes have been under way for a little over three weeks at Ohio State. One freshman student has already learned far more than all the others.
Quarterback Terrelle Pryor is way ahead of the learning curve for a rookie playing the most demanding position in football. He has already shown evidence of being a fast learner. How else to explain his rapid rise from third-stringer to starter in less than a month? Or his leadership during the most dramatic moments of last week’s victory at Wisconsin?

Boone glad to talk the talk: Ohio State lineman keeps things light, but he’s no lightweight on the field

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports

COLUMBUS — In marked contrast to his head coach, Ohio State offensive tackle Alex Boone isn’t afraid to let it all hang out. Ask him a question — any question — and he’ll offer an honest, usually funny, answer.
He vows that coach Jim Tressel has never told him what to say and not to say.
“Me? No. No, they know I’m pretty respectful about people and things,” he said this week during preparations for Saturday’s game between the 12th-ranked Buckeyes and Purdue. “They just tell me not to swear. I swear a lot.”

Ohio State facing dangerous Wisconsin team

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports

Associated Press

COLUMBUS — The game at Wisconsin was already going to be difficult enough for Ohio State. Then Michigan had to go and beat the Badgers, making them even more dangerous by backing them into a corner.
Now the 14th-ranked Buckeyes are expecting the No. 18 Badgers to be angry, inspired and desperate to avoid an 0-2 start in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes speak from experience.

Ohio State: Hostile environment awaits Buckeyes in Madison, Wisc.

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports

Associated Press

COLUMBUS — Of all the hostile venues for teams to visit in the Big Ten, none has quite the rep of Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium, Ohio State’s next destination.
The denizens of the 91-year-old structure have been known to pelt opposing players with batteries or even marshmallows stuffed with nickels. So while the band is rocking to the “Bud Song” or the crowd is pogoing to “Jump Around” between the third and fourth quarters, visiting teams become acutely aware of the fans sitting almost on top the field.

College football: Wisconsin’s loss to Michigan doesn’t make Ohio State any less worried about Badgers

Posted by locofan  Published in College Sports

Associated Press

COLUMBUS — Moments after No. 14 Ohio State beat Minnesota 34-21 early Saturday in both teams’ Big Ten opener, the Buckeyes had already shifted their focus to the next task on their to-do list.
“Wisconsin is a challenge. It’s a huge game,” linebacker James Laurinaitis said. “They deserve every bit of respect we can give them.”
A few hours later, that last statement was open to some debate.
